Interview with the JAC T9 Bakkie

Surprising Power, Smooth Ride, and One Flat-Tire Fumble: My Experience with the JAC T9

I was genuinely surprised by the JAC T9. This bakkie’s no slouch! The 2.0-litre diesel picks up its boots, and I even managed to beat JAC’s fuel consumption claims, clocking in at 7.7l/100km (I promise this was NOT Staged), slightly better than their 7.8l/100km. Talk about a win for the wallet!

Spacious? Check. Loaded with all the gadgets you’d want? Absolutely. Sunroof? Oh yes, even got that too.

But, of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. A flat tire and me (Luckily it was only flat at the bottom) bonding with the jack. Sure, it works, but let’s just say it’s not exactly winning any awards for ease of use. JAC, if you're reading this, we might want to talk about an upgrade. Other than that, I’m impressed, smooth ride, nifty tech, and pretty great value for money.

Now, without further ado, let's dive into the interview!

THE iNTERVIEW

Q: The T9 has been described as having a muscular and imposing front end. Could you walk us through the design process and what inspired the T9's bold aesthetic?

The T9’s design is the result of collaboration between our international design centres in Italy and Japan. Our goal was to create a vehicle that commands attention on the road. The vertical chrome bar grille and sleek LED daytime running lights not only add to my tough exterior but also give me that modern, bold look that stands out in the double-cab market.

Q: With input from international design centers in Italy and Japan, what design elements do you think make the T9 stand out in the highly competitive double-cab market?

My bold, black wheel arches, two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels, and stylish LED tail lights give me a rugged yet refined look. My design is lifestyle-focused, so I appeal to adventurers who want a vehicle that can handle both the city and off-road trails without compromising on style.

Q: The T9 is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine. Can you explain how the Electrical Variable Geometry Turbocharger (EVGT) works and how it enhances performance?

The EVGT adjusts the angle of my turbocharger’s vanes based on the driving conditions. This allows me to provide optimal power and efficiency across a range of speeds, ensuring a smoother and more responsive driving experience. Whether you’re cruising through the city or tackling rough terrain, my engine delivers consistent performance.

Q: With 125 kW of power and 410 Nm of torque, how does the T9 ensure both power and efficiency in daily driving, especially when compared to its competitors?

My turbocharged diesel engine provides a perfect balance between power and fuel efficiency. With 410 Nm of torque available between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm, I’m ready to handle heavy loads or off-road challenges, while still maintaining smooth, everyday drivability. It’s all about making sure you get the most out of every litre of fuel.

Q: What driving modes does the T9 offer, and how do they enhance the vehicle’s drivability in various conditions?

I offer four driving modes: Sport, Normal, Eco, and Snow. These modes are designed to give you versatility for different driving environments. Whether you want to save fuel in Eco mode, handle slippery surfaces in Snow mode, or enjoy a more dynamic performance in Sport mode, I’ve got you covered.

Q: Fuel efficiency is a significant concern for many South African buyers. Could you elaborate on how the T9 achieves an impressive 7.8 L/100 km (Claimed… But we got better!) and the benefits of its 76-litre fuel tank?

With a focus on efficiency, my turbo-diesel engine and ZF eight-speed automatic transmission work together to reduce fuel consumption without sacrificing power. My large 76-litre tank means you can go further between refills, offering up to 1,000 km of range in ideal conditions—perfect for those long adventures or commutes.

Q: How does the T9’s engine and ZF eight-speed automatic transmission work together to optimize fuel consumption during city driving versus long off-road trips?

In city driving, my transmission ensures smooth gear changes and keeps the engine running efficiently at lower speeds. On long trips or off-road, my 4×4 system and low-range gearing kick in, providing the right amount of torque without burning extra fuel. It’s all about smart power management.

Q: Safety is at the forefront of the T9’s design, with six airbags and various safety systems. Could you share more details about the innovative front centre airbag and how it works to protect passengers?

My front centre airbag is an extra layer of protection for front seat passengers, preventing them from colliding with each other during a side-impact crash. It’s one of my standout safety features, designed to reduce injuries in high-risk situations.

Q: The T9 boasts several active safety features, such as Traction Control, Vehicle Dynamics Control, and Hill-start Hold Control. How do these contribute to the overall safety and drivability of the bakkie, particularly in off-road conditions?

These systems ensure that you stay in control, whether you're tackling steep hills or uneven terrain. Traction Control keeps me stable on slippery surfaces, Vehicle Dynamics Control helps maintain stability in sharp turns, and Hill-start Hold prevents me from rolling backwards on steep inclines. Together, they make sure that even the most challenging conditions are manageable.

Q: With BorgWarner's ESOF system for part-time 4WD and a rear diff-lock, how does the T9 handle challenging terrains, and what sets it apart from other off-road competitors in its class?

I handle challenging terrains with ease. My ESOF system allows you to switch between 2H and 4H on the fly (4WD varients obviously), up to 80 km/h, giving you extra traction when needed. My low-range 4L setting with torque amplification, combined with the rear diff-lock, makes tough off-road situations much more manageable. I’ve been tested globally to ensure I can handle any adventure.

Q: The T9 is marketed as a bakkie that offers the luxurious comfort of a passenger car. What specific interior features contribute to this comfort, and how do they enhance the overall driving experience?

Inside, I offer leather-accented seats, an adjustable leather-wrapped steering wheel with cruise control, and climate control air conditioning to keep everyone comfortable. My Super Lux models even have heated seats, a power sunroof, and privacy glass. I’m all about making sure you enjoy the ride, whether you’re heading to the office or the wilderness.

Q: Could you provide more details on the 10.4-inch touchscreen Infotainment system? How does it integrate with smartphones via Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and what other connectivity features does it offer?

My 10.4-inch infotainment system is your central hub for entertainment and connectivity. It supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing you to sync your smartphone for hands-free calls, navigation, and music. I also offer wireless charging, multiple USB ports, and a 360˚ view camera to ensure you stay connected and aware of your surroundings.

Q: With a payload capacity of 1,000 kg and a 3,500 kg braked towing capacity, how does the T9 cater to families or individuals who need a vehicle for both daily use and adventure-filled weekends?

I’m built for both work and play. My 1,000 kg payload and 3,500 kg towing capacity make me ideal for families who need to haul heavy equipment, whether it’s camping gear, a trailer, or even a boat. And my spacious load box ensures there’s plenty of room for whatever you need to carry.

Q: The T9 comes in seven different colours and offers a range of accessories. What are some popular customization options, and how do they allow buyers to tailor the vehicle to their lifestyle?

I offer accessories like roof racks, tonneau covers, and bed liners, allowing you to personalise me to suit your needs. Whether you’re an adventurer needing extra storage or someone who wants to enhance my rugged look, there are plenty of ways to make me uniquely yours.

That’s the JAC T9, blending tough off-road capabilities with modern comfort and safety, ready for anything South Africa throws at me!
